Christie's New York Magnificent Jewels sale December 10,  2014
Christie's New York announced tonight the sale of an oval cut fancy light pink Golconda diamond of 21.30 cts in their Magnificent Jewels sale. The anonymous winning bidder carried it off for US $4,253,000 including buyers premium.

It's right on par with the pre-sale estimate which was between 4-6 million dollars.

The Golconda moniker describes diamonds  devoid of nitrogen--an uncommon and highly desirable trait for a diamond. They are classified as Type IIA and coveted because nitrogen contributes a slight yellowish cast to diamonds. They also tend to be very clean stones. But Golconda is also a place; the Golconda Fort in India was the sole source of diamonds for thousands of years prior to their discovery in Brazil and South Africa.
