Spirit of De Grisogono - World's largest black diamond

WHO KNEW?
Once upon a time in a far away land, carbonado, or black diamonds were routinely chucked out in favor of the colorless 'white' variety. Thankfully for black diamond lovers everywhere, things have done a one-eighty in that department.

WHAT COLOR IS THAT BLACK?
Under microscopic scrutiny, black diamonds may actually be one of several deep toned hues, like intense brownish black or gun metal green.A truly semi-transparent straight black diamond is a rarity inside a rarity.

TRAITS & BENEFITS
A distinguishing trait about all blackies is their phenomenal toughness. We know that all diamonds are exceedingly hard, rating 10 on the Mohs scale. But black diamonds go one step further. Their extraordinary toughness is the result of criss-crossed fissures in their lattice structure, but you knew that. They are hard to cut and polish. But oh baby, when they are polished expertly, the result is dramatic . .   . .  highly polished facets and razor sharp facet junctions. The larger the stones, the better to see it my dear.

THAT'S A BIG' UN!
Take the splendid Spirit of De Grisogono for example. This is the world's largest cut black diamond, and the 5th largest diamond of any kind whatsoever. It was found as a hefty 587 carat rough crystal. Today, it's slimmed down nicely to a 312.24 carat beauty and set in the diamond encrusted ring you see here. The value for such a wonderful object? Who knows? It seems to have been sold to a private customer who's keeping that all under wraps.
