Seven Million Dollar Baby

Colored diamond connoisseurs know their stuff-and are willing to put their money where their paddle is. A prime example of this: Christie's New York boasts the top lot  in their sale today of a special Fancy Vivid Purple-Pink diamond of almost 7 carats---6.89 carats to be exact, but when it's a Purple-Pink who's counting?

When the furor subsided, the eye popping stone earned a cool million dollars per carat, settling at $6,914,500 to the fortunate collector.

Said Rahul Kadakia, Head of Jewelry at Christie's America's, "Following the record breaking $23.1 million sale of the Perfect Pink at Christie's Hong Kong on 29 November, the 6.89 carat Fancy Vivid Purple-Pink diamond led the day at $1 million per carat. The results of the day's sale bring our New York jewelry sales total to $131 million for the year--the highest total ever for the US jewelry auction market."
